If you called the salesperson back, then that wasn't an employee of DirecTV as they do not have direct lines or physical locations. HDDVR instead of Client is above the free offer so would have the one-time lease cost of $199 each that you get, or wait until your first free upgrade to replace Client with HDDVR. You have the option of instead of a Client, having an HDDVR which has 2 tuners, 500GB recording space, and independent processing. The free intro offer includes Genie and up to so many Clients (usually a 4 TV setup) free.
The Genie keeps 2 of the 5 tuners to itself because of the Picture in Picture (PiP) feature. Each recording takes 1 tuner as it is tuned into that channel. Each Mini Genie Client uses 1 tuner to watch TV.
Unfortunately the DirecTV app itself doesn't have that option as they are setup to bill you for each authorized TV on the service, so do not have a login agreement for all channels to allow app use. Channels have their own individual apps that you can download to devices like the Firestick.
